Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today

Now is a great time to make an emergency communication plan for your family. This month, we hope that you will spend time together with your family and talk about how you will contact each other and where you will meet should disaster strike.

National Preparedness Month culminates with National PrepareAthon! Day on September 30 when we turn our attention from awareness to action. If you have not already done so, please use this national day of action to practice your family emergency communication plan, and make sure everyone knows what to do and has the phone numbers they need to stay in touch.

Join America’s PrepareAthon! Visit www.ready.gov/prepare. Click on Be Counted, Add Your Activity and tell us how you, your family and friends, and community are getting more prepared. Your registration could motivate others to prepare!

Brazos Valley is a regional CERT program established in 2002, with a focus on preparing citizens to help themselves and their neighbors in a disaster. We have trained 55 teams with over 900 members. We cover the 7 counties that make up the Brazos Valley Council of Governments, Brazos, Washington, Burleson, Robertson, Leon,Madison and Grimes. We have been selected as one of three best practices programs in Texas.  We also offer a basic Disaster Preparedness Class that includes a free family first aid kit upon completion. Remember in a disaster our first responders may be delayed and you may be called on to help will you be ready?

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
